What is a veneer?

A veneer is a thin layer of tooth-coloured material that is fitted on your tooth. It can fill gaps, repair broken corners, discoloured and yellow teeth whiter again and make crooked teeth look straight. A veneer is made of composite or ceramic.

Difference Between Composite and Ceramic veneers

There are different types of veneers, but the basic principle is the same. However, there is a big difference in the type of material that makes up the veneer and the characteristics and treatment that goes with the type of material. Below you will find an overview of the characteristics of the different types.

Composite veneers

For composite veneers, the tooth hardly needs to be prepared or shaped. The lifespan is 4-8 years shorter than with porcelain veneers, but it is mch cheaper. Installation can often be done in 1 session, which means that you get a good result quickly and for a reasonable price.

Porcelain veneers

Porcelain veneers have a very long lifespan, they do not discolour and look natural. The smooth texture makes for an easy fit for your lips. For a porcelain veneer the relevant tooth needs to be thinly shaved down.

Non-Prep veneers

As an extra option, we also offer porcelain and composite non-prep veneers (veneers with no shaving down). These are ultra-thin veneers, about as thick as paper. This solution offers a beautiful result without any reduction of  your own teeth. The disadvantage is that, because they are so thin, corrections in colour, shape and position of the teeth are limited.

Composite veneers

  • Shorter lifespan, 4 to 10 years
  • Relatively inexpensive compared to ceramic veneers
  • Discoloured and dull over time
  • Less wear-resistant
  • Placement in 1 treatment
  • Hardly any shaving down required
  • Natural effect through use of colour and transparency
  • Easy to repair

Ceramic veneers

  • Very durable, 15 to 25 years
  • More expensive than composite veneers
  • Does not discoulor
  • Very wear-resistant
  • Placement in more treatments
  • Shaving down necessary
  • Very natural effect due to transparency and colour layers
  • Repair only possible by replacement

Veneers at Tandartspraktijk Diemen-Zuid

Making and placing veneers is specialist work, which is why we do not make veneers for everyone. For a good result that you will enjoy for years, it is important that they are placed in a healthy mouth. That is why we will want to check your oral health before we can make veneers. Sometimes the oral health is not good, so that veneers are not an option. If so, we will always discuss with you another treatment plan in order to get your teeth healthy again.

Dental laboratory

Ceramic veneers are not made by your dentist alone, but we work closely together with a dental technician. Dental Practice Diemen-Zuid works together with the Esthetic Dental Team for aesthetic treatments. This is a dental laboratory that is fully specialized in aesthetic veneers, crowns and bridges. The possibilities of the Esthetic Dental Team are much wider than in an ordinary dental laboratory. That is why the end result is always excellent.

Dental rates

Before a treatment like placing veneers we always first do a cosmetic intake by the dentist. During this intake, the dentist looks at your situation and the options are discussed so that an realistic cost estimate can be made. The costs of this intake are between €100 and €210, depending on how complicated the treatment plan is. This does not include X-rays, photos are always taken after consultation with you. Most supplementary dental insurance policies give you back the costs of the intake interview and the photos.

The price of veneers depends on the material we use. You can choose between porcelain and composite veneers. Furthermore, the number of veneers that are placed and the way in which the dentist carries out the treatment play a role in the costs of a veneer treatment.
